The Publications section also contains an online version of The Rainbow Years, a history of the university's first twenty-five years, written by Judson Grenier, historian and History Professor Emeritus at CSU Dominguez Hill. The first yearbook, Los Gitanos, was published in 1966, and future editions were published intermittently under different names through the 1990s. The Yearbooks and Publications section contains scanned pages of all campus yearbooks. It includes images of the different campuses, buildings and their construction, the presidents, administrators, faculty, benefactors and students who have been associated with the university over the years. This collection contains digitized photographs, slides, negatives, clippings, and architectural drawings representing the school's history from 1960 to the present. The college was granted university status in 1977. The college was renamed California State College, Dominguez Hills, with the first classes held on the permanent site in October, 1968. The college soon moved, first to the temporary Watt Campus, and finally to a permanent site on Dominguez Hill, land which was once part of the historic Rancho San Pedro. Conceived in 1960 to serve the booming postwar population of the South Bay area, the institution opened as California State College, Palos Verdes in 1965, with classes held on the second floor of a bank building. Hamdan, they have secured over $50 million in grants and partnerships, serviced over 5,500 students and teacher-candidates through their lab school, provided support in producing hundreds of teachers who have gone on to be leaders in education, and secured almost a dozen federal grants. In 2013, they launched the California STEM Institute for Innovation and Improvement to focus on the teacher shortage in the Los Angeles area. Kamal Hamdan, a leader in STEM education, successfully directed the implementation of those programs, which resulted in greatly contributing to California State University Dominguez Hills’ recognition for producing the most math and science teachers in any college or university in California. Initially, they oversaw Transition to Teaching, STEM Teachers in Advanced Residency, and Urban Teacher’s Fellow programs that assist in training STEM educators. The organization began in 2001 at Cal State University, Dominguez Hills. Above all, they offer participants the opportunity to make a difference where they are needed most. They offer all of their program participants ongoing advising and financial and academic support. They are continuously forming multiple partnerships with high-need schools and school districts as well as community colleges. Through all of their programs, they systematically address the shortage of STEM teachers in high-need schools in and around the Los Angeles area and across the state.ĬSI 3 has developed innovative undergraduate, credential, and graduate programs.
